Division I State Champions

Tigers Win First State Championship! Defense & Jones

Cleveland Heights 9 Columbus Academy 4

It was their year! After a number of Final Four trips, including being Runner-Up in 2005, the Cleveland Heights put it all together in the 2006 finals and dominated the Columbus Academy Vikings in route of a 9-4 win. The Tigers used a smothering defense lead by Tiffany Smith (Tournament Defensive MVP), Melissa Logan, and Sarah Dodo and an All American performance from junior Zoe Jones (4 goals, 3 assists and Tournament Offensive MVP) to frustrate the previously unbeaten Vikings  who had won 15 straight games.

Heights went in front 2-0 on goals by Stanford bound, Dana Lindsay and Jones.  It took the Vikings fourteen minutes to solve the Tiger defense when Rachel Mozenter found Vicki Foreman for their first score, but 2-1 was as close as it would get.

Jones scored with 3:23 remaining to give Heights a 3-1 half time lead. Following the break, the Tiger junior really took over, scoring twice and assisting twice on goal by Sarah Dodo and Lindsay. The Tigers lead 7-1 with 15:31 to play and could sense the victory.

Mozenter and Foreman added second half goals, but the 2006 OSLA Division I State Champions were clearly the Cleveland Heights Tigers!

Cinderella Beats the Clock, Warriors Win With :02

Walsh Jesuit 5 Stow Munroe Falls 4

It was two ticks until midnight, but Cinderella didn't turn into a pumpkin, instead, she became the queen of the big dance. Junior Libby Puckett  (Offense MVP) took a pass at midfield raced behind the goal, rolled the crease and fired home the game winner to give the Warriors a State Championship and a storybook season!

Defense was the order of the day, as both teams made it tuff to get a good shot.  Walsh went on top 2-0 at the 18:15 mark, but following a time out by Stow, it only took the Bulldogs one minute to pull within one. The teams then traded goals, but a Warrior score by  Captain Flannery Marley gave WJ a 4-2 half time lead.

The teams battled back and forth to open the second half with Walsh getting shots on goal, but Bulldog keeper Elijah Song had her second great day between the pipes (18 saves, Tournament Defensive MVP).  When Stow sophomore Katie Swanger found the net for her third goal of the day, the Bulldogs had battled all the way back to tie the score at 4-4 with 13 minutes to play.

Again it was back and forth and it looked as though the game would go to OT, as Stow had  possession with the clock running down.  However at :20 the Bulldogs were flag for off sides, setting up Puckett's run to the goal.

Cinderella Story Continues for Walsh Warriors

Walsh Jesuit 11 Wellington 9

The Cinderella team of the 2006 OSLA Tournament is looking to take one more turn around the dance floor. The Walsh Jesuit Warriors, the #4 seed in the North Region, defeated the Wellington Jaguars 11-9, in the first Division II semi final.  The Warriors took advantage of Wellington mistakes early and built a half time lead before the Jaguars good get on track.  The Warriors were lead by Margaret Gaglione with 4 goals, Molly Goldic 2 goals.

Marlowe Mavian found the net 5 times for the Jags.  The real story was Warrior goalkeeper Ashley Powers, who recorded 12 saves.

Walsh:  Gaglione 4g, Godic 2g, Flannery 1g, Ross 1g, Prentis 1g  Puckett 2g

             Powers 12 saves

Defense Carries Bulldogs Into All North Final

Stow 5 Mason 3

The Stow Bulldogs rode a tenacious defense that shutout the Mason  Comets in the first half and  lead to a 5-3 win, to join Walsh Jesuit in an All North Division II final.  The Bulldogs goalkeeper Elijah Song had 15 saves to lead Stow's swarming defense that the Comets couldn't solve.  Stow's top defender Michelle Palmer shutout Mason's leading scorer Erin Swigart.  Shannon Rohrich  with 3goals and Katie Swanger with 2 goals and 1 assist was all the offense the Bulldogs needed. Kelly Chanatry had two goals for Mason and Brittany Bare 1goal.

Stow:  Rohrich 3g, Swanger 2g, 1a    Song 15 saves

Mason:  Chanantry 2g, Bare 1g, Swigart 1a, Camacho 1a, Reed 10 saves

Heights Tigers Jump Out Early and Hold Off Cardinals

Cleveland Heights  14  Thomas Worthington 11

The Cleveland started shooting when they got off the bus and quickly jump in front of Thomas Worthington 4-0.  You can't give the #1 seed that big of a cushion.  The scrappy Cards battled back to tie the score at 7, and only a goal by Melissa Logan off a great assist from Zoe Jones with 1 tick left on the clock gave the Tigers an 8-7 halftime lead.

The second half looked like a replay of the first, with Heights scoring three goals in the first four minutes to surge in front 11-7.  The teams traded goals from that point, but the Tigers were on their way to their second Division I finals in as many years.

Cleve Heights:  Lindsay 4g, Tranchito 4g, Dodo 2g, Petry 1g, Logan 1g, Jones 1g, 4a, Hall 1g 1a  Weiss 7 saves

Thomas:  Taylor 5g, Stillwell 2g, 3a, Skelton 2g, Richards 1g, Strathern 1g, Carey 1a,   Gibbs 6 saves

Vikings Balance Too Much for Blazers....

Columbus Academy 10  Hathaway Brown 4

The entire year they were a team without a super star, but they were twelve that played like one.  The State Tournament semi final was no different.  The Columbus Academy Vikings just had too much balance and too much experience for the young Hathaway Brown Blazers. on their way to a 10-4 win.  The Vikings got two goals each from Natalia Ciminello, Rachel Mozenter, Katie Reis, and Chantal Serle'.  Cameron Powel lead HB with two goals.

The win sets up a long awaited match-up between the two #1 seeds in the tournament and they finally get to play a game that was scheduled in April before Mother Nature intervened.  Academy will play Cleveland Heights for all the the 2006 OSLA Division I crown.

CA:  Ciminello 2g 1a, Mozenter 2g,Reis 2g 1a, Serle' 2g, Ferger 1g, Butt 1g, 1a,  Carruthers 17 saves

HB: Powel 2g, Hill 1g, Taft 1g,  Dosrey 1a

The Division I Semi-finals will be played at Kings High School in Kings Mills on Friday night at 6:00 pm and 8:00 p.m.  The Division II Semi Finals will be held at Mason High School with games at 5:30 and 7:30.  Both of these outstanding facilities have turf fields, plenty of parking.  Thanks to both Kings Athletic Director Matt Koenig, and Mason Athletic Director Rod Russell and their staffs.
