Hannigan Galipault History This tournament is in memory of Chrissy Hannigan and John Galipault, and it is an Ohio Lacrosse tradition. The players, coaches, officials, and volunteers are part of this great lacrosse event to honor their memories and to honor the game. Chrissy Hannigan - was a Worthington High School student of played center for the 1985 Worthington Junior Varsity Girls' Lacrosse team. She is fondly remembered not only for her lacrosse skills, but for her love of the game and her school. She was tragically killed in an ATV accident in 1986. Her father and grandfather started the Worthington Lacrosse Scholarship Fund in her name with hopes that others could benefit from the sport that she held so dear. Since it was established, many Hannigan Scholarship recipients from both Thomas Worthington, and Worthington Kilbourne High Schools have not only gone one to play at the collegiate level, but have become coaches or officials to help the sport and honor Chrissy's memory. Several past scholarhip winners will be participating in some capacity at this year's tournament. John Galipault (1930-1993)- is considered by many as Central Ohio's "Father of High School Lacrosse." In 1971, John secured funding from the Worthington Cardinal Boosters for equipment for the Worthington High School boys lacrosse team. In 1974, he started the Worthington Girls Lacrosse program. In 1990, the program was initiated in the Worthington middle schools. John coached numerous All-Midwest and All American players, both boys and girls. He worked tirelessly to promote the growth of the game and to develop youth and high school programs throughout the state of Ohio. He was the first Commissioner of the Ohio High School Lacrosse Association. In 1995 John was inducted posthumously into the Ohio Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
There were no major upsets at the 2008 Hannigan Galipaut Tournament for the first time in recent memory, but there was some great lacrosse. The featured game of the day was a match up between 2007 Div. I & II State Champions Sycamore and New Albany. Previously unbeaten Peters Twp of the WPIAL lost a double header to host Thomas Worthington and Upper Arlington. Fifteen teams battled the cold and the opponents to go 2-0 on the day. Out of the 47 games played, the only tie was Shaker Heights and Mariemont 8-8. For some great HGT Action shots go to...2008 HGT Action Congratulations and Thank You to the hard working Thomas Worthington Girls Lacrosse parents for a great event! Despite the chill in the air....the HGT is still the premier event in the Midwest...
