Ohio
University Drops Women's Lacrosse, Four Men's Sports
(Editor's note: for more about "Save OU Lacrosse" go to the
following blog
saveohiolacrosse.blogspot.com/)
ATHENS, Ohio -
The Ohio Department of Athletics has announced that men's indoor and
outdoor track & field, men's swimming & diving, and women's lacrosse will no
longer be offered as varsity sport programs, effective at the conclusion of
their respective 2007 seasons. The move will reduce the number of programs
offered by Ohio from 20 to 16.
"Ohio Athletics is committed to being a Division I-A program that serves
and supports the educational mission of Ohio University, and serves as a
source of pride for the university, the Athens community and the state of
Ohio," Director of Athletics
Kirby Hocutt said. "Yet we are faced with some significant problems that
have been in existence for several years. This announcement is the first
step towards addressing those issues. If we don't make these tough decisions
now, we would place our entire program at risk."
Like the rest of Ohio's Lacrosse community, OU Coach Allison
Valentino could not hide her disappointment and made these comments following the Univeristy's press conference
announcing her program's demise..."I feel extreme disappointment for the
Ohio Lacrosse program. This is a sad day for Ohio lacrosse, and a sad day
for lacrosse in general. I don't want to focus on that as much as I want to
focus on my team and my girls that have given everything that I've asked
them to since day one when I took over this program. I could not have asked
for a greater group of girls to coach. They've done everything I've asked
them to, and more so my heart aches for them. Right now all of my thoughts
and all of my energy is geared to supporting them and helping them do
whatever I can."
OSLA Commissioner Ernie Hartong also expressed his
disappointment in OU's decision. "This is truly a sad day for lacrosse.
I am very disappointed in Ohio University's decision to discontinue the
fastest growing sport in the country. It is certainly a loss for
lacrosse in the state of Ohio. OU's program was just reaching a point
where graduates are giving back to the sport as high school coaches and
officials. We have lost an ongoing source for both. Mostly, I
feel badly for the hardworking and dedicated student athletes who will now
be faced with the difficult choice of continuing their education at OU and
not playing a game they love, or transferring to another school that has
lacrosse and has an academic program that meets their needs. Many Division I
lacrosse coaches have already made their scholarship commitments for the
2007-2008 year, so while they might be interested in an OU player, they may
not have a scholarship to offer. I also feel badly for Coach
Valentino, she is a bright young coach that recognized the lacrosse talent
in the state of Ohio. She certainly was trying to help the sport grow
in our state."
Current Ohio
players on the OU roster are:
Lindsay
Marshall, Jr. (Hilliard Davidson), Jen Ator, Jr. (Hudson), Kelley Windle,
Jr. (Worthington Kilbourne),
Dannille Hale, So. (Magnificat),
Melanie Klein, So. (Sycamore), Meredith Post, So. (Sycamore).

Travis, Head Coach, Mercyhurst North East, Erie, PA
Junior colleges are places where students can come to prove themselves in
academics and learn to compete at a high level athletically. In this essay
for Sticks Up, I’d like to talk about what a junior college is, and why it
might be a good option for some graduating high school seniors.

Duquesne Tops Buckeyes...Take Five Game Win Streak into A-10 Season...
Riding the crest of a five
game winning streak, the Duquesne Dukes of the Atlantic 10 conference
increased their season’s record to 7-2. The latest victory was an exciting
7-6 win over Ohio State at Rooney field in Pittsburgh. The game was played
in a virtual monsoon, but that didn’t stop the Dukes from blanketing the
Buckeyes top scorers in the second half, thanks in large part to a sterling
effort by goalkeeper, Meredith Norris. The game matched Dukes Coach Mike
Scerbo, who was an assistant to Buckeye Coach Sue Stimmel at OSU for four
seasons before moving to Duquesne. The Dukes have featured balanced
scoring from several players, including Ashley Wood (Shaker Heights, ’04)
with 15 goals and 1 assists to date. Former Wooster standout Christa Mann
is once again anchoring the defense with 26 ground balls, 29 draw controls
and 26 caused turnovers. The Dukes host Atlantic 10 foes La Salle on April
7th and 9th ranked Richmond on the 14th.
