Guide Lines for Coaches and
Players Regarding Out of Season Participation
Each year we
get a number of questions regarding summer tournament or league
participation. OSLA Board member Terry Saylor has put together a good
summary of what is and is not allowed with regard to out of season
participation. This is an area that the OSLA Board and Commissioner's office
will be looking at more closely.
1.
For the months of June and July, a coaching staff may
participate in 10 days of activity with their team – there is no restriction
on the number of players from one team during these months - but only for 10
days of any activity, including practices, scrimmages, games and tryouts.
2.
Any activity involving practices, competition, etc in all other
months other than June and July is restricted to the 50% requirement (6
players maximum from the same school). There is no “10-day” allowance for
these months. No player may practice with or play in any event where the
team is composed of greater than six team members from the same school.
Exception: a. “Box” lacrosse, with a maximum of seven
players per side, is considered a separate sport, and is not restricted by
the 50% requirement. This exception allows for participation in such
activities as Winter League play, and 7v7 tournaments. The tournament or
league sponsors of such activity must submit in writing to the
Commissioner’s Office for approval 10 days prior to the scheduled activity,
and be approved by the Lacrosse Board. No activity by any group is allowed
without such approval.
3.
No activity may occur that involves more than seven players to a
side for a group consisting of more than six players from the same school in
months other than June and July. Note that indoor activity is not always
considered “box” lacrosse. For instance any activity that involves more than
7 players to a side is not considered a separate sport, and is therefore not
permitted, unless the 50% rule is maintained.
4.
Players may organize and participate in any lacrosse activity,
regardless of format and school representation, as long as no member of the
coaching staff or organization is involved in any way in coaching the
participants. This activity is restricted to out-of-season play, and may
include participation in camps, clinics or college sponsored events (3v3
etc), or at similar activities. Participation in competition is restricted
to the participants being self coached. In addition, for 12 v 12
events, the 50% player participation rule applies.

Dr. John Griffith Killed in Traffic
Accident
Dr. John Griffith of Timonium,
Maryland (formerly of Cleveland) was tragically killed Saturday (July 28) in
Dewey Beach, Delaware while on vacation with his family. John was repairing
a bicycle chain on the side of the Costal Highway when he was struck by a
car.
Dr. Griffith, an
obstetrician-gynecologist, was an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine and director of the hospital's Fibroid
Center.
John was a men's lacrosse official in the
Baltimore area, having started officiating in the Cleveland area. He was
the husband of former Shaker Heights High School women's lacrosse coach Liz
Wilson.
"He
was a wonderful human being who worked in a very important area of women's
health, and his death is so senseless. So much talent and training to help
others is now lost," said Dr. Edward D. Miller, dean of the medical school
and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine. "This is a tragedy for everyone," he
said yesterday.
Dr. Harold Fox, director of gynecology and obstetrics at Johns Hopkins,
recruited Dr. Griffith in 2004.
"John was regionally and nationally known and was destined to become a
major leader in his field. He was a shooting star on a great trajectory,"
Dr. Fox said. "He was gentle, kind, compassionate and impeccably honest.
He was every good word you could think of. We're all in shock. His loss is
being felt so profoundly by all who knew him."
"He was with us for three years, and he was just an amazing physician and
surgeon. I never saw him angry, and I never heard anyone say anything bad
about him," said Dr. Jean R. Anderson, a professor of gynecology and
obstetrics, and director of the division of gynecologic specialties at
Hopkins. "His priorities were very clear. Our family came after his own,
and we were very proud to be a part of it."
Services for John will be this weekend.
The thoughts and prayers of the Ohio
lacrosse community are with Liz and her children.
